White Cane Training Program in Doolow
Day One: Introduction to Disability Inclusion and White Cane Awareness
The White Cane Training Program officially commenced in Doolow District, Gedo Region, organized by UDHAN in partnership with International Organization for Migration.
The first day focused on providing participants with theoretical knowledge aimed at strengthening their understanding of disability inclusion and independent living. Participants learned about:
The concept of disability and the rights of persons with disabilities.
The importance and benefits of the white cane for persons with visual impairments.
The role of assistive devices in promoting independence and mobility.
Educational opportunities for persons with disabilities.
Introduction to Braille and its importance in literacy and education for blind and visually impaired individuals.
The sessions provided participants with a strong foundation and understanding of how assistive technologies and inclusive practices can improve their daily lives.
Day Two: Practical White Cane Mobility Training
The second day focused on practical mobility and orientation skills.
Participants received hands-on training on the correct use of the white cane, allowing them to practice safe and independent movement in different environments. Trainers demonstrated:
Proper white cane techniques and handling.
Safe walking methods using the white cane.
Obstacle detection and avoidance.
Navigating streets, pathways, and public spaces independently.
Building confidence and self-reliance through mobility skills.
The practical sessions enabled participants to apply the knowledge gained on the first day and improve their ability to move safely and independently within their communities.
Day Three: Closing Ceremony and White Cane Distribution
The three-day training program concluded with an official closing ceremony attended by representatives from government institutions, community leaders, partner organizations, and members of the public.
During the ceremony, participants who successfully completed the training received white canes to support their continued mobility and independence. The distribution marked an important step toward empowering persons with visual impairments and promoting their full participation in society.
Speakers at the event highlighted the importance of accessibility, inclusion, and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities. They also commended the collaboration between UDHAN and IOM in supporting disability-inclusive development initiatives in Doolow.
