











White Cane Training Program in Baidoa
Day One: Introduction to White Cane Use and Independent Living
The White Cane Training Program officially commenced in Baidoa, organized by Somali visual impaired youth organization (UDHAN) in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The first day focused on introducing participants with visual impairments to the proper use of the white cane and raising awareness about its importance in promoting independence, mobility, and self-reliance. Participants learned about:
• The importance of the white cane for persons with visual impairments.
• The role of the white cane in safe and independent mobility.
• Techniques for improving orientation and movement in daily life.
• The benefits of assistive devices in enhancing independence and accessibility.
• Building confidence and self-reliance through mobility skills.
Members of UDHAN facilitated the training sessions, providing participants with essential knowledge and guidance to support their independent living and social inclusion.
Day Two: Practical White Cane Mobility and Orientation Training
The second day focused on strengthening participants’ mobility and orientation skills through practical exercises and hands-on learning.
Participants received comprehensive training on the correct use of the white cane in different environments. The practical sessions covered:
• Proper white cane handling and techniques.
• Safe walking and navigation methods.
• Identifying and avoiding obstacles.
• Navigating public spaces and community environments independently.
• Enhancing confidence, safety, and independent movement.
The practical training enabled participants to apply the knowledge gained during the first day and develop essential skills for independent mobility and daily living.
Day Three: Closing Ceremony and White Cane Distribution
The White Cane Training Program concluded with an official closing ceremony in Baidoa attended by representatives from the South West State Ministry of Women and Human Rights Development, IOM officials, community members, and other stakeholders.
During the ceremony, participants who successfully completed the training received white canes to support their continued mobility and independence. Throughout the program, participants gained practical knowledge and skills on how to effectively use the white cane in their daily lives.
Several participants expressed their appreciation for the training and the valuable skills they acquired. They also emphasized the need for specialized educational centers and increased opportunities for persons with disabilities.
The White Cane Training Program represents an important step toward promoting disability inclusion, accessibility, independent living, and equal opportunities for persons with visual impairments in Baidoa. The collaboration between UDHAN and IOM demonstrates a shared commitment to empowering persons with disabilities and strengthening inclusive community development initiatives.
